Grand Opening...

Hands is so excited to have our grand opening after the initial plans were delayed by the pandemic.  On this date we will have a chance for new arrivals to meet with community members.  This event will be a chance for those interested to hear about future goals and vision.  With social distancing guidelines in mind we will be holding the event in an open area and ask attendees to follow all best practices.

Welcome to the United States

This event will be a chance for new immigrants to get a friendly and inspiring welcome to their new home in the United States.  The HANDS organization is united around the idea of new arrivals to the United States feeling a sense of belonging and security.  This is a great opportunity for those that want to be part of presenting the best and most welcoming feeling for new arrivals.

Community Involvement 101

 - Workshop

We know it is common for people to have the urge to get involved in their community but not know where to start.  This event is a chance for enthusiastic and volunteerism-minded individuals to hear from people with volunteer and community organizing experience about how to get started.  This is an opportunity to make sure that you can engage with the community with a culturally sensitive and productive mindset.

The Importance of befriending Widely - Workshop

One of the biggest challenges as a new immigrant is reaching out and establishing connections within an unfamiliar society.  We know how powerful friendships with other immigrants from a similar background can be.  But it is also important and helpful to build those connections with those with different backgrounds and to be empowered by the knowledge gained from these new perspectives.  This event is intended to give a jump start on navigating the social customs necessary for meeting people and establishing friendly relationships in the United States.

Introduction to School System​ 

- Workshop

 

Introduction to School System:  This event is a chance for new arrivals to learn about the options for school enrollment and how to best advocate for your children.  We will also cover how to best communicate with teachers to make sure that your children are being best served by the school system.  There are many additional support options available for children, such as English Learner assistance; and it is absolutely critical that parents have the know-how to advocate for their children to get all the services they are entitled to.

Learning English as an Adult

 - Workshop

 

We know language learning as an adult is hard.  There are, however, so many great and painless options for improving your language abilities.  This workshop offers an opportunity to build a plan for improving your English and learning about what courses and learning opportunities as available.  For some people, enrolling in a course with a college's adult educational extension might be a great option, but there are also options available for those with busy schedules or those trying to learn on a budget. There will also be plenty of chances to sneak in some English learning while at the workshop.

Cultural Orientation

A Cultural Orientation workshop is designed to help newcomers learn about the customs, values, and traditions of their new community. These workshops typically cover topics such as cultural differences, social norms, and communication styles, as well as practical information on how to navigate daily life in the new community. By providing newcomers with a better understanding of the cultural context in which they are living, these workshops can help to reduce culture shock and promote a greater sense of belonging. They can also help newcomers to build stronger relationships with members of their new community, which can facilitate their integration and overall well-being.

Job Readiness

- Workshop

The job readiness workshop is designed to prepare newcomers for the job market in their new community. These workshops typically cover topics such as resume writing, job search strategies, interview skills, and workplace culture. They also provide information on available job opportunities in the community and connect newcomers with local employers. By equipping newcomers with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the job market, job readiness workshops can help them build a better future for themselves and their families. They can also help newcomers integrate more effectively into their new community by providing opportunities to build professional networks and contribute to the local economy.

By addressing mental health issues and promoting good mental health practices, this workshop can help newcomers feel more confident and empowered in their new environment, allowing them to better navigate the challenges of adapting to a new culture and building a new life.

Technology and Digital Literacy - Workshop

A Technology and Digital Literacy workshop is designed to provide newcomers with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the digital world. The workshop typically covers topics such as basic computer skills, internet safety, and using online resources for education and employment. Participants may learn how to use email, search engines, and social media platforms, as well as how to identify and avoid online scams and other potential hazards. The workshop may also include instruction on using mobile devices, cloud storage, and other digital tools. By improving their technology and digital literacy skills, newcomers can enhance their employment opportunities, access educational resources, and participate more fully in their communities.

Family and Social Support

Participants may also learn about the challenges of adjusting to a new culture and strategies for managing homesickness and other forms of emotional distress.
